In this workshop, I was working with leaders of leaders, helping these very intelligent people in the room grow their own emotional self-awareness and self-regulation through different activities and discussions. It’s easy to think about growing the emotional prowess of those that report to you and yourself, but more difficult to think about impacting others including those above. It struck me that the people in the meetings who were angry and not productive, had a leader who was tolerating this behavior.
In this newsletter, I’d like to focus on the wake that leaders make through the neglect of leading, primarily leadership emotional growth. I believe that leadership, including mine, must be measured by the performance of the team being lead. Let’s look at three areas:
- Insidious ways we tolerate inappropriate behavior in others
- Neglectful ways we shrug off inappropriate emotions in others
- Destructive ways we delay coaching individual team member’s actions
- Resisting ways to grow our own emotional muscle
