On this diagram, as Fear increases, Anger increases. When Anger increases, we tend to adopt a binary view – the people I’m angry at and the people I’m not angry at - which I’ve called Taking Sides. As I view others through this narrow lens, I reduce Listening to All Points of View. With my limited view, I only see the bad in the world and it increases my Fear. The loop goes around again. Every time we go around this loop, we’re more fearful and more shut down. Sound familiar?
Here’s an anecdote to the unstoppable Fear loop.
As Respect for Others increases, Fear decreases. It’s tough to Fear someone that is treating you with respect. Without Fear, Anger isn’t triggered. Without Anger, there is no need to hide by Taking Sides. You’re open to Listening to All Points of View. Every time we go around this loop, people are becoming more connected and collaborative.
This simple fix is not easy. It is very difficult to have Respect for Others in the world right now when Fear and Anger are running rampant. It is a choice that everyone can decide to make or not.
