At the same time, we have been reflecting on what we accomplished this year. Some of our strategy was right on and worked well. Some of it struggled and didn't turn productive. That's because strategy is always a guess - an educated guess, but a guess nonetheless. No one can tell the future, even though we forget that that is exactly what we are doing when we build strategy.
Projects are the Manifestation of Strategy, so they might not be the right projects if the guess was wrong. That's why it's so critical to tie strategy to projects. The most difficult and more financially important thing a leader must be willing to do is stop a project that isn't going to create the return that was planned. It is during a project's struggle that bad strategy becomes clear.
