With virtual teams a given, it can be more difficult to talk with people real-time. I have been coaching myself and team on limiting email and boosting personal contact (phone, visit). A new employee was having a misunderstanding with one of our customers. We discussed the conversation she would have which was not an easy thing for her. I assumed (bad leadership) she'd call and she sent the difficult message as an email. An angry email came back in return. She shared it with me saying, "I should have called, right?" Yup. Pretending it will save time, we launch an unclear, inappropriate email. It won't work and it will likely cause a more difficult conversation with more time lost. Minimally, pick up the phone.
How often do you have conversations with people while looking at your monitor, phone or whatever documents are in your hand? Make eye contact when talking with others. It completely enhances your connection. Depending on your behavioral profile, this will be harder or easier for you. Make eye contact. Make eye contact. Obviously, I am working on this. Make eye contact Lou.
