•DOLLAR BILL game (a very common BIG CLOSE) : Ask people to take out a bill with a face on it (any face will do. Ask the group to locate the mouth on the bill. Ask them to fold bill away/down from the bill at one side of the face and then at the other side. At this point the bill looks like a lopsided table with a face on the top. Now ask them to make a fold in the center of the mouth in the other direction by squeezing the other two folds toward the center. When that’s all worked out, ask that they slightly open up the bill, and you still need to see the folds. Finally, ask them to hold the bill with one hand on each end of the bill and rotate it forward and back slowly. If you look carefully, you’ll see the face smile and frown as you rotate the bill.
WAIT! I warned you not to PERFORM!!! We need to have a beginning and end schtick that frames this fun exercise.
Beginning Schtick: We’ve come to the end of the session, and I have a little exercise to help us on our way. (DO TRICK ABOVE WITH EVERYONE). Ask “how does this Dollar Bill trick reinforce what we’ve been learning today?” Get everyone to make a quick point. I usually say “On the bill you see a happy person, and a sad person depending on how you move the bill. It’s up to you now at the end of this class to continue to build and apply what you have learned. Thank you so much for coming, and I’ll be here for a bit if you’d like to chat.
The big END must be memorable - consider ending with a quote, or a short story, or a dumb magic trick (that's usually my choice) that is tied to what you hoped they would learn. If you don’t know how to do the BEST IDEA IN THE ROOM Big End, contact me at Lou.Russell@MoserIT.com
Here’s how you can check on how your delivery is going, and how you can get even better:
- At the end of the workshop, you should be exhausted. You should have used every thought you had to make this the best workshop for your learners.
- Make notes and remember the places you want to tweak or the places you just forgot about. I taught a new online workshop called Strategic Leadership last month, and there were so many things I wanted to change. I hesitated to look at the evaluations at first. When I did, (what?!) the learners were happy and thanked me for what they had learned. Like what we discussed at the start, the authenticity of the teaching drives learning retention and collaboration. If you’re being real, people will respond.
If you’d like more tips and tricks for keeping your learners engaged, check out my book The Accelerated Learning Fieldbook. This is my second book (it’s OLD) but you can still find unused and used versions. The premise of this book is how to Accelerate Learning using Multiple Intelligences. Check it out!
We made it to SEPTEMBER!!! Happiest…
