Learning and Development is a field of work that is about growing people which I have been working in for over 30 years. It’s about helping others learn and apply new ways of thinking, living, working and connecting. It’s very sacred work. Many new ideas have been created in L&D, including eLearning, microlearning, Agile development, etc. Most of the new techniques and tools were created by building on research from those that came before. As an example, the Agile Manifesto was created in 2001. Companies are just now trying to adapt the approach to work. It really isn’t new.
In L&D, I’m saddened to see growing disrespect. There are smart, popular consultants starting witch hunts to prove older methods, or approaches that are different are wrong. In the process, they are destroying other’s livelihoods and missing the point. Older methods were the first tries, the initial building blocks on the path to today’s contributions. Dissing 30 year old building blocks may get you some attention, but in truth, the work we do now was informed by these practices, and likely, missteps. Why the public dismissal of powerful research done earlier by brilliant and dedicated people? Why is there nothing said about improving L&D, just criticism? As my friend of mine said “what about Professional Courtesy?” I agree.
