Create a Private If-Then Plan
We all make mistakes and stumble. We build our own barriers and detours.
Pretend you are working on NOT drinking so much coffee during the quarantine because it’s making you anxious. You can make a message for yourself like this using IF-THEN:
“If I get the urge for another cup of coffee, I’ll grab a seltzer instead. “
Learn what your triggers are, notice them, and make up an IF-THEN statement for each to break the old habits.
Treat Yourself Well
When you are feeling Reptilian, you can take it out on yourself with thoughts like “You don’t deserve better” and “Don’t even try.” Tell yourself that you deserve to be happy and strong. Treat yourself as you would treat your favorite friends. Eat well, sleep well, pamper yourself, and be kind to your mistakes.
Leaders – how do you take care of your team?
One of the things I did early on was hold meetings twice a week phone calls with my small team. This way we have been able to stay connected and our projects keep moving. We start on Monday AM and our other meeting is Thursday AM. That’s not to say that we don’t talk otherwise, but we have not been physically together since March, and we need to stay in touch. Yesterday morning, we spent a lot of time talking about things that weren’t work related, which helps us stay connected.

I’ll leave you with a poem from the Hero’s Journey Foundation:
Now Give Me Your Hand
God speaks to each of us as he makes us,
then walks with us silently out of the night.
These are the words we dimly hear:
You, sent out beyond your recall,
go to the limits of your longing.
Flare up like flame
and make big shadows I can move in.
Let everything happen to you: beauty and terror.
Just keep going. No feeling is final.
Don’t let yourself lose me.
Nearby is the country they call life.
You will know it by its seriousness.
Give me your hand.
