THERE IS NO "WE," THERE IS NO "THEM," THERE IS ONLY YOU AND ME AND ALL OF US. AND THEN THE DANCE BEGINS.
Here’s a brief overview of the conditions we are all in:
When we are acting as a BOTTOM (Fixer), we are experiencing problems with the system, problems we think people higher up should be fixing. Under stress, we see problems as projects, know how to fix them and blame the TOP and MIDDLES for not doing anything.
When we are acting as MIDDLES (Integrator), we struggle with conflicting demands, priorities and pressures from all sides (360 degrees). Under stress, we choose our alliances, connecting to certain parts of the system and disconnecting from the rest. We may lose the most important connection – peers.
When we are acting as a CUSTOMER (Validator), we look to get what we’ve asked for from someone else to move our work ahead. Under stress, we hold the delivery systems responsible for delivery, and clarify what we are NOT.
No matter what our condition, we seek to survive and develop. We look for opportunity, fear and danger. The same interactions play out and are repeated over and over.
Barry and company have created an extensive experiential program to illustrate the problem which Russell Martin & Associates teaches. Please contact Keely for more info.
Think of how you sit in each of these conditions (we play all everyday), and where you can do a better job changing the dance. In the multitasking world of now, simply taking the time to connect with others will help alleviate some of this dysfunction. Taking the time to build an alliance vs. competition with peers is also effective.
Barry’s research shows a system with Empathy. The ability to see others and help others regulate in a way that takes the focus from Me to You is an important differentiator for effective leadership.
