Instead of labeling this area 'teams', we're using the focus area CHALLENGE to stress the importance of teams as a unit, not as a group of talented individuals. If you think you're busy, it's easier to work alone. The challenges of today's organizations will need more innovation so this lack of collaboration will eventually create blind spots and chaos.
• I don't have time to talk about things
• I don’t like to confront
• I can't trust them yet
• I don't like some of my team
He would then figure out a variable that the team could focus on individually while working together to move the focus from negative thoughts to just noticing. For example, he might suggest making a mark next to each note taken in a meeting indicating whether you didn't trust (-), did trust (+) or weren't sure (0). By simply noticing minimal trust, people tend to trust more.
Tim also shared with me that when you're in a negative emotional state, your only options are fight, flight, freeze and flock. Flock points out how we hide in cliques to avoid difficult conversations, reinforcing our inability to build trust and work together. Emotional Intelligence, a critical piece of RMA's CHALLENGE area, predicts a team's ability to work together. Dr. Izzy Justice, principle researcher behind our EQ assessments writes in a recent blog:
The more authentic you are currently living your life, the more courageous you are. That’s it. I am arguing that the more true we are to ourselves in front of all audiences and circumstances, the more courageous we are. For our true emotions and thoughts to be manifested in our behaviors is courage. The adage “adversity does not create character, it reveals it” is absolutely true and the more courageous we are in our day to day lives, that is living true to who we truly are, no matter who that is, the more likely it will be that when faced with adversity, courage will manifest itself.
