As Halloween approaches, it’s time to think of scary things. If you’re currently a manager, leading your technical talent may be scaring you. In the Big Bang Theory, Sheldon Cooper is an over-the-top archetype of a brilliant, analytical mind lacking the ability to understand people. Staff with similar behavioral strengths and Blind Spots may report to you. You may have gotten calls from peers who have been frustrated with these people. Some of your other staff may get angry with the Sheldons. Is it possible to help a Sheldon-ish person grow their ability to connect with others effectively without losing their technical edge? I think so.
I excelled at math and ended up with a degree in Computer Science. I have a mind for process but I do not have a mind for lots of detail. I got my Masters in Instructional Systems Development (aka training) and found my calling. I’m not Sheldon, but I do have nerd tendencies.
We all bring different strengths and blind spots to our lives. I hope to share with you strategies to build stronger relationships and outcomes with staff who aren’t like you. If you are more Sheldon-like, you’ll benefit from reading ways you can connect with others as well.
