Imagine a training manager taking a call at his or her
desk. “We’ve got a project that is $1 million dollars over
budget and really struggling. What have you got that can
help this team? I need you over there yesterday!” A novice
manager would quickly refer the caller to their catalog of
e-learning or instructors led workshops on the web, and
encourage the team’s participation in a team building,
conflict resolution or project management generic workshop.
This intervention will fail because: 1) It is not tied to
the problem at hand (in fact, assumes the problem), 2) It is
not customized to this business / team, 3) It is not clearly
actionable (what do we do with all this new stuff?), and 4)
It takes the team away from their already late project for
two more days.
This is the kind of thing that gives training a bad name.
Instead, a better manager will be able to pick up this
session and lead 1 – 2 day facilitation, nudging the team to
define and solve its own problems. |

WHAT THE SESSION PROVIDES
This session
would encompass three current strategies to show business
results from training including performance consulting (find
the root cause and fix it), ROI (as in the Jack Phillips
model and using the right metrics), and the use of games
(Bob Pike as a prime example and user of these methods).
This session
offers value by providing multiple business-tested
activities in a format that allows novices to experts to
easily select and adapt them to their own situation. These
activities are grouped by business problem, helping people
get past the uncertainly of when and how to select the right
activity for the right learning need.
WHAT PARTICIPANTS LEARN
After attending this
session, the participants will be able to:
-
Quickly implement a facilitation and/or training
solution that is fun, flexible and effective.
-
Match the right solution to the problem it solves best.
-
Design, implement and measure the success of a Training
Triage Technique.
